Among the refugees of the war in Ukraine, there is an above-average number of academics, who should be able to continue their university studies abroad. Here, digital media can lower access barriers, but lack of knowledge of the language or the education system in the host country hampers participation. In addition, needs vary from person to person, which makes counseling processes complex. This article presents a cross-institutional recommendation system that proposes personalized recommendations for suitable learning paths and makes appropriate educational opportunities accessible. We present the system's structure and mode of operation, based on the currently developed national infrastructure for digital education in Germany, as well as initial findings from its evaluation based on the use case of Ukrainian refugee students.

Digital games are an important leisure activity for teenagers. In Germany, 72% of 12- to 19-year-olds play every day or several times a week in the year 2021. This poster abstract presents a research design to survey students’ conceptions of programming and designing digital games and their functionality. The research results will advise computing education in programming digital games. In the pilot study with seven secondary school students we used the methods of brainstorming, sorting, structural mapping technique and miracle question to figure out which methods are suitable for our research purpose. First results show that some relevant computing-related phenomena in the context of game design can be identified. For instance, we found the following categories: bugs and errors, server functionality, object behavior and game execution.

This paper presents a model of digitalisation-related competencies for teacher education, developed by a working group on digitalisation in teacher education (WG DidL) at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Currently, there are various models available that outline the competencies teachers should develop for being equipped to work in a digital world. These approaches often mention various, widely applicable digitalisation-related competences that teachers are meant to acquire, or they are based on a limited or only implicit understanding of digitalisation. The aim of the presented model is to contribute to the discussion of how to best integrate existing models. It is based on an integrated understanding of digitalisation-related competencies that encompass teaching and learning with digital media, as well as learning about digitalisation as a subject matter in its own right. At the center of the model are generally formulated competency goals for teaching and learning, for professional engagement, and for reflective, critical-constructive teaching practice. The potential for achieving these goals is then illustrated by means of interdisciplinary and/or subject-specific examples. In this way, the model can also be applied to specific subject areas and to their teaching methodologies.

Interest affects not only a person's personality development and professional career, but it is also an important motivator in the learning process. Despite this, in computer science education, there is a lack of empirical studies on student-specific interests. With this study, we hope to bridge some of the gaps by analyzing the interests of 7th to 10th grade students based on 252 self-generated questions about the digital world. These questions were categorized using four separate category systems derived in part from other research: fields of the digital world, thematic content, type of information requested, and motivation for asking the question. In addition, an analysis of gender and age differences was carried out.
The findings suggest that data security and privacy are topics of great concern to students of this age group. Furthermore, students are interested in learning how to program apps or software. This also refers to students who have never taken a computer science class in school. Significant differences were found between boys' and girls' motivation for raising questions. For instance, boys asked significantly more questions about applicative knowledge that they could put to use. Finally, we discuss how self-generated questions and interests of students can enhance computer science education.

The communication of computer science (CS) teachers with their students has an influence on their motivations and interests in CS up to later career choices. Communication occurs in spontaneous classroom situations based on teachers’ habitual orientations. This single case study uses a narrative interview and an analysis with the documentary method to investigate a male (53 years old and with 23 years experience in CS teaching) teacher’s habitual orientations concerning interaction with female students in CS classes. A discrepancy in the teacher’s perception of encouragement and actual interaction was highlighted. Instead of motivating and especially promoting female students as self-reported, the teacher is oriented towards gender-neutral lesson preparation. Furthermore, our results show an orientation towards creating competitive situations between male and female students. Finally, we found three types of stereotypical thinking about female students.

Playing digital games seems to be an important leisure activity of 12 to 19 year olds in Germany: 63% of them stated to play at least several times a week in 2019. Studies show that dealing with game designing can have a positive effect on programming competences. Therefore, it is no wonder that digital games often used as a favorite context for teaching programming. Surprisingly, there is a lack of studies on students' mental models of programming in the context of digital games. This poster presents a Ph.D. research project and its design approach to identify students' conceptions and mental models concerning a specific digital game. As a long-term study, the project shall give an insight into the development of students' conceptions of object-oriented programming (OOP) and their ability to apply learned OOP concepts to digital games (e.g. Tetris™) in introductory classes over time.

Within different approaches and aims to teach programming, context-specific languages are used which might support different paradigms. Therefore, we are developing a framework for modeling programming competencies regardless of the used language or paradigm. In this paper, we present an open repository for measuring competencies to support our theoretical model. Our goal is to make use of already existing assessments for programming by evaluating their quality and fit to our competency framework. We conducted a systematic literature review to find assessments present in the ACM DL, develop a scheme for evaluating the quality of the assessments following three criteria (objectivity, reliability, and validity) and a scheme for evaluating their fit to the competency framework. An in-depth analysis of 13 assessments showed that all fit to our competency framework with an average coverage of 39% of all concepts. Regarding the quality of the assessments, three reported the reliability by evaluating Cronbach’s alpha and five the validity by using different methods. To expand our open repository and to improve our framework we plan a five-step program: analyze more, develop a guide, fill gaps, specialize and replicate assessments. We hope that providing this framework will foster the development of competency models in the field of programming.

Preparing young people for their future with digital competenciesis an important goal for all educational systems. Competency frame-works already exist in many countries and function as guidelinesfor teaching at school. A central area is the data and information literacy, which also plays a key role in computing (education). As a school relevant topic it should therefore be examined more closely. For any learning activity, the interest in what to learn has a major impact on learning motivation and success. But the development of interests in school subject contents is also affected by its teaching contexts. In this respect, it is an open question whether these contexts should be related close to the everyday life of the students or whether they should be unique to have a positive effect on the situational interest of the students. Results can help selecting motivational teaching contexts and to facilitate the learning process, making it easier for students to acquire the required competencies. This paper presents results of a pilot study (N=28), which is part of a bigger research project consisting of two main studies. This pilot study belongs to the first main study. We present results on how 7th and 8th graders rated 12 contexts for teaching data literacy regarding the relation to their everyday life or uniqueness. This pilot study primarily serves to test a self developed questionnaire and its comprehensibility to use it in the first main study. It also gives first insights into expected results of the upcoming main study.

Interest has a not negligible effect on learning motivation and success. Thereby, the development of interests in school subject contents is also affected by its context during teaching. Whether these contexts should be close to the everyday life of the students or more distant (uncommon) in order to be more interesting for them, is an open question.
In this paper, a selection of 12 contexts for teaching data literacy is described and first findings are presented on how 7th and 8th grade students assess these contexts in relation to everyday life. This pilot study (N=28) primarily serves to test the questionnaire and its comprehensibility, but also gives first insights on expected results for the upcoming main study.

This volume contains keynotes, papers, and posters presented and discussed at the 15th Workshop in Primary and Secondary Computing Education (WiPSCE) held from October 28th to 30th, 2020 for the first time ever as a virtual conference. The worldwide corona pandemic in 2020 made it necessary to cancel the originally planned venue, which was Essen in Germany.

Research in primary and secondary computing education is a young field with strong ties to national educational systems. Nevertheless, its theories, methods, and results are internationally applicable and of interest to the community of researchers and practitioners as well. WiPSCE aims at improving the exchange of research and practice relevant to teaching and learning in primary and secondary computing education, teacher training, and related research.

This year, we introduced some slight changes to the submission and review process of the conference. We worked with two separate submission deadlines: a first one for full and short research papers and practical reports only and a second one (after the first notification deadline) for posters and demos. At the first submission deadline, we received 51 submissions in the categories full paper, short paper, and practical report, which shows that the K12 computing education community is quite active. Each full paper was reviewed by at least three members of the International Program Committee (IPC), short papers and practical reports were reviewed by at least two members of the IPC. Of the submissions we received, we directly accepted eleven submissions (ten full papers and one short paper). 22 further submissions were regarded as being acceptable in another category. For these submissions we introduced the concept of conditional acceptance, which means that they had to be resubmitted at the second submission deadline together with new submissions of posters and demos. After the resubmission, each of these conditionally accepted papers was re-reviewed by one of the original reviewers of the first round of reviews. At the second deadline, we also received 12 new submissions of posters, which were reviewed by two members of the IPC each. For the conference we finally accepted 34 submissions (ten full papers, three short papers, five practical reports and 16 posters), leading to an overall acceptance rate of 53%. The reviews were conducted in a double-blind way and according to international standards in our field. Discussions between reviewers were encouraged and moderated by the program chairs.

This volume also includes two invited keynote abstracts. Maya Israel (University of Florida, USA) presented her work on “Countering pedagogy for the ‘privileged’ in CS for All: A Universal Design for Learning theoretical and practical lens for addressing the needs of students with disabilities in K-8 CS education” and Ute Schmid (University of Bamberg, Germany) reported about “AI goes to school – learning about and learning with artificial intelligence”. We would like the thank the keynote speakers for accepting our invitation.

The WiPSCE 2020 was financially supported by the “Interdisciplinary Center for Educational Research” of the University of Duisburg-Essen and by the Adesso company. We are very grateful for the generous support.

Finally, we would like to express our gratitude to everyone who was involved in the organization of the conference and to everyone who contributed to the conference in one or another way and we warmly invite everyone to join us at the WiPSCE 2021.

The learning of programming can take manifold starting points, e.g. via friends or family, a school course, a compulsory requirement in vocational education (e.g. industrial robotics) or even in an academic setting (e.g. formalization and execution of mathematical algorithms in numerical mathematics). Within these approaches, context-specific programming languages are used, which might support different paradigms. In this paper, a proposal for a language and paradigm overarching competency structure model is developed from theoretical considerations. By analyzing different programming languages, textbooks and papers three content dimensions are derived. Principles and the application of high-Level paradigms build the first dimension. The second dimension elements represents paradigm and language independent concepts of program components, data types, basic data structures and algorithmic paradigms. The last content dimension language is defined by syntax, semantics, standard library and the build/compile and run process of programming languages.

Problems with programming or object-oriented programming (OOP) have been reported in several studies. There is still a lack of studies that explore (particularly secondary school) students’ conceptions of OOP.
Many introductory programming classes in German secondary schools use Greenfoot or BlueJ as an Educational IDE (eIDE). Surprisingly, there are almost no studies on the effect of eIDEs on students’ conceptions of programming. This Ph.D. research project aims to find an applicable design approach to identify students’ conceptions and mental models concerning the used eIDE.

In recent decades it has become apparent that discipline-specific and educational language skills required for different school-subjects can only be taught within lessons of the very subject. The specific requirements of all the different subjects cannot be taken into account in general language-lessons. These findings led to adaptions in Germany's educational policy to consider specific language requirements in many curricula of different subjects. It also led to publications of many scientific papers as well as practical and methodical material addressing integrated language and subject teaching.

Particularly computer science (CS) has a special role compared to other sciences, because in CS students have to learn various languages: formal ones, such as modelling or programming languages, and they have to develop computing-related language-skills in writing, reading and speaking.

Even though there are first publications about discipline-specific language learning in CS education, there is still a lack of research concerning language-sensitive CS education and CS teacher qualification. Therefore, concepts and research approaches on this topic are developed by an interdisciplinary cooperation of the Computing Education Research Group and the project "German as second language in all subjects" at the University Duisburg-Essen. This paper presents first results of our current work and gives an exemplary insight into the development of teaching material for writing descriptions of UML class diagrams using a genre-based approach.

such as data literacy, have developed. However, on the one hand
little is known about the interests of students in such educational
topics and in the digital world itself but on the other hand interest
is an important factor during the learning process. Therefore, in

The ability to categorize concepts is an essential capability for human thinking and action. On the one hand, the investigation of such abilities is the purview of psychology; on the other hand, subject-specific educational research is also of interest, as a number of research works in the field of science education show. For computer science education, no corresponding studies are currently available. However, investigating how learners build categories from a choice of given terms may be useful for several reasons; for example, learners’ perspectives on relations between terms, as well as potential misconceptions, can be detected and made available to educators aiming to improve lesson planning. Therefore, we conducted an empirical study with 490 German students from primary to higher education, in which we presented them with 23 information technology-related terms (such as computer, Facebook, hard drive, virus) on a questionnaire, with the task of assigning these to self-defined categories (and then giving their categories individual names). In the results, we identified a number of potential categorization strategies the participants might have used to categorize the given terms; these include generalization, purpose, place of use, state, part-whole relationships, and association. Recognizing and defining such categorization strategies can help teachers construct learner-adequate concept maps of the domain, which helps foster the elaboration of learners’ knowledge structures in this field. We found that the younger participants used less abstract names for their categories, and observed that some participants had difficulty categorizing some terms (such as robot and 3D).

In order to define and create certain elements of object-oriented programming source code, a necessary prerequisite for prospective programmers is being able to identify these elements in a given piece of source code. A reasonable task is therefore, to hand out existing source code to students and to ask them to highlight all occurrences of a certain concept, e.g. class identifiers or method signatures. This usually results in wide range of highlights. To quantify the received results and therefore to make plausible inferences about possible abilities, it is vital to have a reliable and valid method of measurement. First, we investigate various means of measurement towards this concern, including measures from inter-rater reliability and agreement, Cohen's κ and Krippendorff's α, as well as measures from binary classification, such as F1. Those values are then applied on constructed examples. We found that Cohen's κ already represents a given response in an adequate manner.

Social networks are widely and increasingly used by youths. Thereby, they experience various computing-related phenomena (such as recommendations for new contacts or interesting content), which might require further explanation. From conception research in science education it is known that such everyday experiences can lead to the formation of individual explanations and conceptions, which do not necessarily have to be in line with underlying scientific concepts. Incomplete or wrong conceptions can lead to difficulties in future learning processes. Therefore, the description and analysis of such conceptions is relevant for computing education, because they can be used by teachers for the development of student-centered classroom activities. Since social network systems are complex computing systems, the investigation of student conceptions had to be limited to selected aspects to keep the study manageable. Therefore, in the study described in this paper, middle school learners' perspectives of personal data processing, data storage and algorithmic processes in social networks were investigated based on the model of educational reconstruction. A total of eight semi-structured interviews with 12 to 14 years-old learners from two grammar schools in North Rhine-Westphalia, West Germany, were conducted using an interview guide that focused on the abovementioned computing-related aspects of social networks. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed using the method of qualitative content analysis according to Mayring. As a result, a number of conceptions could be identified, which were anchored in the technical concepts, but of ten superficial and quite general.

The object-oriented programming (OOP) paradigm is quite prominent in German secondary schools. To challenge and overcome possible difficulties in the learning process it is vital for educators to have knowledge about possible (mis-)conceptions. Traditionally, these are gathered by investigating the mental models of students, e.g. towards object-orientation. While on the one side lots of misconceptions could not be reproduced in replication studies, on the other side most of ten students are asked, while teachers could provide an overview on one or several courses. To tackle both aspects at once, this paper describes the investigation of teachers views on occurring student misconceptions regarding OOP in their lessons. Therefore misconceptions were gathered from literature and were condensed into a survey. The answers of 79 teachers are analysed regarding the frequency with which teachers register misconceptions, which of those are possibly new and by fitting linear and quadratic regression models it is investigated, which external factors, such as teaching approach, work experience or educational degree, might influence the perceived frequency of registered misconceptions. All aspects show promising results for further investigations towards the research of misconceptions in OOP.

Digitalization has progressed rapidly in recent years and will probably continue to do so in the future, which impacts all our everyday lives. Work life is changing and so is education. In 2006, the European Union dened digital competence as one of eight key competences for lifelong learning. As a result, a process of defining "education in the digital world” began, which is not yet completed. But what is the digital world anyway from the students’ points of view? In this paper, we present answers to this question given by 198 students, who were in grades 5, 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12 of German secondary schools. As part of an association test, we asked them for the terms they think of, when they hear the term "digital world" on the one hand, and the terms "digital world" and "computer science" on the other. Students often associated terms such as computer, cellphone and internet, but also programming, communication, and social networks, but could only partially relate their terms to computer science. Our results show that the age, gender, extend of computer science education received and the free time students spent on computer science topics inuenced the associations they gave. Furthermore, the results indicate, in which areas it might be worthwhile in follow-up studies to investigate learners’ interests.

So far, there is hardly any empirical research on the question of what raises or influences the interest of school learners in computer science or computing education. Aspects to be considered are for example pedagogical decisions of the teacher concerning contexts, phenomena, situations, or concepts to which a lesson or a lesson sequence refers, planned learner activities and many others. This paper analyses a model for describing interest in physics on its transferability to computer science, reports about the development of an online questionnaire for investigating the computing-related interests of school learners and gives results of a first empirical pilot study (based on N=141 datasets). Based on the participants’ answers concerning socio-demographical aspects, the computing interest of different groups of learners was analysed. A higher level of computing interest was found at male pupils, learners who indicated that they were striving for a computing-related job, that computing was their favourite school subject, or that they had good or very good school marks in mathematics or computing.

This study investigates the difference between novice and expert programmers in memorizing source code. The categorization was based on a questionnaire, which measured the self-estimated programming experience. An instrument for assessing the ability to memorize source code was developed. Also well-known cognitive tests for measuring working memory capacity and attention were used, based on the work of Kellog and Hayes. Thirty-eight participants transcribed items which were hidden initially but could be revealed by the participants at will. We recorded all keystrokes, counted the lookups and measured the lookup time. The results suggest that experts could memorize more source code at once, because they used fewer lookups and less lookup time. By investigating the items in more detail we found that it is possible that experts memorize short source codes in semantic entities, whereas novice programmers memorize them line by line. Because our experts were significantly better in the performed memory capacity tests, our findings must be viewed with caution. Therefore, there is a definite need to investigate the correlation between working memory and self-estimated programming experience.

Smartphones have had a rapid rise. From the first affordable mobile phones to modern high-tech devices, they have become ever more complex and increasingly popular. In 2016, almost 100% of the 12 to 19 years-old youths in Germany owned a smartphone and used it regularly. Considering their large impact on adolescents' lives, smartphones are uniquely suited to be analyzed as examples of socio-technical computing systems in secondary computing education. Moreover, they play an increasing role in digital media education in all school subjects. There is however, among other things, a lack of scientific work covering learners' conceptions of smartphones needed for learner-centered computing education with and about smartphones. This article describes an explorative study that investigated secondary school learners' conceptions in the context of smartphones. A first overview of existing conceptions regarding selected aspects of smartphones was derived from eight semi-structured interviews.

Latent pre-instructional conceptions on a certain topic, which learners bring into the classroom, can have a significant influence on the learning success to be achieved there. In science, therefore, the model of educational reconstruction was developed, which regards the comparison between technical domain concepts and existing learner conceptions as an essential and iterative element within instructional design. In order to support this process, the conceptions of learners and teachers on different topics of science were investigated in thousands of works so far. In the area of computer science, however, comparable research has so far only been conducted to very little extend -- concerning e.g. conceptions of the Internet, the computer and the way programs work. Within the paper at hand, the authors intend to add to this research by contributing learner conceptions of (relational) databases. A semi-structured online questionnaire was used to collect the perspectives of 193 German learners. It contained open questions on the conceptions of databases and their everyday applications as well as on the explanation of computing-related phenomena with an indirect relation to databases. The data analysis was carried out using the method of qualitative content analysis according to Mayring and provided three different category systems for various aspects of the subject. As a major result it was found that the conceptions of learners regarding relational databases can be structured according to the ANSI/SPARC acrchitecture model for DBMS, however, completed by an everyday perspective on its three layers (external, conceptual, and internal). Finally, the identified learners' perspectives were compared with the associated scientific concepts for similarities and differences with the method of reciprocal comparison and guidelines for structuring database teaching were derived.

The perception and previous knowledge of pupils are an essential but rarely explored part of the arrangement of computer science education. Most pupils use computers, smartphones and the Internet on a daily basis and develop their own understandings of them, but these conceptions are hardly integrated in their education. According to the idea of educational reconstruction, the pupils' processes of learning will be supported and made easier and their cognitive representations of the subject matter will get more interconnected and applicable, if their understandings are included in the educational processes. Therefore, we adopted an early study from biology education and investigated how 386 German pupils of different school types arranged, categorized and distinguished 23 terms related to the digital world (eg. "computer", "mobile phone", "Facebook"). We also asked, if any of the terms does not belong to the other terms in the opinion of each respondent, and found that robots and 3D were the most frequent terms not to belong to any of the others.

In two special issues of the ACM journal "Transactions on Computing Education" (TOCE), 14 extensive case studies about the various situations of Computer Science Education (CSE) in K-12 schools in 12 countries (respectively states) were collected. During the work at the ITiCSE 2015, we have performed a deductive qualitative text analysis on these case studies in order to extract the most useful information. As a category system, we applied some selected categories of the Darmstadt Model that was developed by the working group "Computer Science/Informatics in Secondary Schools" at the ITiCSE 2011. Based on the coding results, we summarized information about the different fields of Computing Education at schools, the intended goals and competencies, the taught content, the applied programming languages and tools and the different forms of assessment and teacher education. Despite the limitations of the analyzed articles, representing just snapshots of complex situations from the specific viewpoint of the respective authors, we were able to collect some interesting results.

9) vorgestellt.

Computer Science (CS) Education research, specifically when focusing on secondary education, faces the difficulty of regionally differing political, legal, or curricular constraints. To date, many different studies exist that document the specific regional situations of teaching CS in secondary schools. This ITiCSE working group report documents the process of collecting, evaluating, and integrating research findings about CS in secondary schools from different countries. As an outcome, it presents a category system (Darmstadt Model), as a first step towards a framework that sup-ports future research activities in this field and that supports the transfer of results between researchers and teachers in CS education (CSE) across regional or national boundaries. Exemplary application of the Darmstadt model shows in several important categories how different the situation of CSE in secondary education in various countries can be. The Darmstadt Model (DM) is now ready for discussion and suggestions for improvement by the CSE-community.

In the year 2004, Bavaria (one of the 16 federal states of Germany) started an innovative subject "Informatics" in its highest type of secondary schools (Gymnasiums). It is comprised of a compulsory stage (grades 6--10), which is followed by an eligible course in grades 11 and 12. The curriculum of the course is based on the "objects first" (or better "modelling first") approach. All relevant object-oriented concepts are introduced and used in the context of standard software, before the students write their first object--oriented program. In July 2009 the first class completed the compulsory stage. We evaluated the experiences of this first run in December 2009 by a large scale study about the teachers' opinions about and attitude towards this new subject. In this paper we present some of the first results that partly were obtained using cluster analysis. The results show, that our approach to the curriculum is accepted by the teachers. Additionally, we used the results of clustering to identify typical response patterns, leading to a characterization of the teachers.

Learning and programming environments used in computer science education give feedback to the users by system messages. These are triggered by programming errors and give only "technical" hints without regard to the learners' problem solving process. To adapt the messages not only to the factual but also to the procedural knowledge of the learners, their problem solving strategies have to be identified automatically and in process. This article describes a way to achieve this with the help of pattern recognition methods. Using data from a study with 65 learners aged 12 to 13 using a learning environment for programming, a classification system based on hidden Markov models is trained and integrated in the very same environment. We discuss findings in that data and the performance of the automatic online identification, and present first results using the developed software in class.

Recently, the importance of computer science education in secondary schools has been coming more and more into focus. Students' interests and motivation to pursue a career in CS related fields are highly influenced by school. Also beliefs in the nature of CS are influenced, and necessary foundations in knowledge and skills are built. However, a major problem is the gap between information and communication technologies (ICT) and computer science (CS). Often pupils have only experiences in ICT, and therefore develop inadequate beliefs about CS. We propose educational standards for CS in lower high school in order to bridge ICT and CS.

Learners often use learning and programming environments to practice basics of programming and solving algorithmic problems. To adapt the software feedback to each learner's problem solving process, the learning environment will be enhanced with a tool to identify the individual problem solving strategy in-process automatically. Former attribution of problem solving strategies to patterns in recorded learner-system interactions by human researchers should be validated with the help of questionnaires based on the Theory of Reasoned Action. To identify the patterns automatically, speech recognition methods can be used. In this research project each single problem solving strategy is modelled by a hidden markov model.

In einigen deutschen Bundesländern (z.
